Construction Fundamentals   

This hands-on leadership development program is designed for construction professionals who are preparing to take on supervisory or foreman responsibilities. Participants will develop practical skills in team leadership, communication, planning, decision-making, and workforce management while learning how to successfully transition from working alongside peers to leading them. Through classroom instruction, mentoring, real-world jobsite experiences, and guided leadership scenarios, participants will practice: · Leading crews with varying skill levels and experience · Communicating expectations and providing direction · Managing personalities and workplace relationships · Planning work activities, materials, and resources · Conducting safety meetings, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and Toolbox Talks · Delegating tasks and holding team members accountable · Knowing when to leverage the expertise of others while maintaining leadership authority · Developing the mindset and professionalism required of a foreman and future superintendent The program combines leadership theory with practical application, allowing participants to observe and practice supervisory skills in actual construction environments while receiving feedback and coaching from experienced industry mentors. The goal is to build confidence, leadership presence, and the skills needed to successfully lead construction crews and projects.

The Introduction to Construction Skills is a hands-on career exploration and hiring event connecting high school seniors and community job seekers with local employers and opportunities in the construction industry.

High school seniors will connect directly with area employers and explore the skills and careers available in construction. Students will participate in hands-on sessions featuring construction safety and industrial measurement, then choose one of three skill-building sessions: Blueprint Reading, Basic Framing, or Basic Concrete. Participants will also learn about NIACC's construction programs, credentials, and training opportunities that can help them prepare for a career in the industry.

Beginning at 12:30 p.m., the job fair opens to community job seekers, offering an opportunity to meet local construction employers, explore career pathways, learn about current job openings, and connect with employers looking for skilled workers. Community participants can also register for a free Industrial Measurement class to begin building a valuable construction skill.

With winter conditions fast approaching us, winter weather can introduce severe physical challenges, environmental dangers, and unique operational risks for those outdoor workers exposed to the elements. This class is designed to educate employees and supervisors on how to identify, prevent, and mitigate cold-stress injuries and winter-related hazards. Participants will gain practical knowledge on recognizing the early signs of cold-related illnesses, understanding OSHA safety guidelines, safely operating equipment in freezing conditions, and utilizing proper personal protective equipment (PPE).

Safety isn’t just a box to check. It’s the foundation of every successful build. This course guides you through national safety standards for residential and commercial construction. Gain confidence in knowing your rights, recognizing workplace hazards, and understanding OSHA compliance. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a 10-Hour OSHA Construction Card.
